Help This Brave Little Dog Face Another Surgery
Friday, July 27, 2007

It’s hard to believe that someone would abandon a 12-pound, five-year old Lhasa mix in the street of Mattapoisett, Massachusetts. But that’s where the Mattapoisett Animal Control Officer (ACO) found this spunky, big-eyed, big-hearted survivor that she named Toby.

Toby has turned out to be a survivor to the core. The ACO contacted us because Toby was heartworm positive and the town had no money to pay for his treatment. This is often the end of the line for strays that are brought in by animal control – and the heartache and frustration for caring ACOs. Dogs come in with treatable medical conditions, but due to lack of funds the ACO’s only option may be to euthanize the dog.

That’s where PoundHounds comes in. Our PoundHounds ACO Collaboration (PAC) program is a grassroots program dedicated to improving the standard of medical care and visibility for dogs in municipal pounds and shelters in order to increase their chances for adoption. We created the Miracle Medical Fund to help ACOs get critical medical care for dogs like Toby.

Through the Miracle Medical Fund, we sponsored Toby's heartworm treatment, but he suffered heart and lung complications during treatment. While recovering, he fell and broke his shoulder. Because he has toughed it out through so many problems, we decided to stand by Toby and pay for surgery to fix the break. Toby continues to defy the odds and has come through every setback with flying colors – and a wagging tail. Now he may require another surgery to fix the pin in his leg that has come loose.

His treatment and surgery bills are over $5,000. Toby has made it clear that he’s not ready to give up on life, so we’re not ready to give up on Toby. Please consider donating to help us with some of these costs. Any amount will help.

*If donations exceed the costs associated with Toby’s treatment and care, we will apply those gifts to the PoundHounds Miracle Medical Fund to help other homeless dogs in need of medical care.
