Spay/Neuter

Since PoundHounds formalized the spay/neuter component of the ACO Collaboration Program in 2001, it has helped frustrated ACOs in communities across Massachusetts do something concrete to end the cycle of pet overpopulation that leads to overcrowding and unnecessary euthanasia.

The spay/neuter program has had an extraordinary impact on the lives of ACOs and pound dogs. Here are some examples:

*Four ACOs in the program have gone from spaying/neutering 0% of adoptable stray dogs in town pounds to 100% of dogs – that represents over 230 stray dogs in four towns alone.

*These ACOs said that the ability to spay/neuter a dog or offer medical care to a dog gives the dog “a much better chance” for adoption.

*Two ACOs have said that the most important impact that the spay/neuter program has had is “higher quality adoptions.”

*Four ACOs told us that they felt better about their job because:

-They are able to provide healthier animals and/or higher quality adoptions.
-Dogs not being returned to the pound.
-They take great pride in the quality of the animals whom they are placing.
-They can now do everything they can to help a dog.
-It is fulfilling to see the progress that a dog made from the time they entered the pound to the time they were rehomed.
-They feel relief at not having to refuse help to a dog simply because of lack of funds.

PoundHounds is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization. We have accomplished our work on behalf of these wonderful dogs through your generous support. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to PoundHounds, so we can help more dogs in town pounds.
